Elena Renker / New Zealand

Elena Renker / New Zealand

Elena Renker's artworks are formed through fast and fluid movements. Starting with a solid block of clay, she sculpts and cuts, giving her complete freedom in the shaping process.

Next, she hollows out the pieces to create interior spaces, decorates them with iron-rich slip, applies Shino-style glazes, and fires them in a wood kiln for 15 to 18 hours.

There must be a symbiotic relationship between the form, clay, glaze, and flame. Each element plays a unique role in the creation process. They can be shaped and glazed, but then they must be handed over to the flames to work their magic. When the kiln door opens, you never know what will be discovered.
